"Technology Is a Dead Bird" (originally titled "Between Here and Now") is the title track of the album of the same name by Mars Argo. Two versions of the song were released, one being the original album version, and the other being an acoustic version of the unreleased Johnny K remix with alternate lyrics, featured on the Internet Sessions EP.
Background[]
An instrumental demo of the song titled "Between Here and Now" was used in the Grocerybag video "Sunday", released on March 22nd, 2009.[1] Lyrics from the track were posted to the Grocerybag blog in April 2009.[2]
A remix of the song, produced by Johnny K, was recorded at Groovemaster Studios in 2010, however this version was never released, likely due to the cancelation of the duo's second studio album. An acoustic performance of this version was uploaded to YouTube on June 8th, 2010,[3] the audio of which was later included as a track on the Internet Sessions EP on August 18th, 2010.[4] The original studio version leaked online on July 6th, 2018.[5]
Theme[]
This song tells of a 'dead bird' that is technology. In poetry, art, and literature, a bird represents freedom, therefore, a dead bird represents imprisonment or no free will. Technology being in one's hands (and therefore the dead bird) could represents the voluntary use of this imprisonment; they duo is stating that one voluntarily gives in to the mental imprisonment that is technology.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1: Titanic Sinclair]
Just let me love, let me be
Here on the floor
Flying eastward toward the shore
Knowing that the stars won't last in the sky
I took you to a prison cell
You were afraid and I could tell
Then on a train we met a friend
Who showed us that we should pretend
[Pre-Chorus: Connie]
I need to be myself again
I know precisely when it is time to be the actor
It is amusing when everything is confusing
Let us be in on the joke the world is afraid to admit
Or ashamed to confess
Or, alternatively
Eager to expose
How is it that I'm all of the above?
There's got to be more than denial and drugs
Empty bottles are starting to feel less fun
And would deceive us is deceiving
[Pre-Chorus: Mars Argo]
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
[Chorus: Titanic Sinclair]
We could live in a dream (This isn't any time or place to be)
Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)
Buried under a tree (This isn't any time or place to..)
Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)
[Bridge: Connie]
Every one of us is in our wonder years
Wishing we were just one year younger
I, I need to get over myself
I'm going to end up on top of the mountain one of these days
If I make it long enough
Sometimes I just want to drift away into outer space
[Chorus]
We could live in a dream (This isn't any time or place to be)
Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)
Buried under a tree (This isn't any time or place to..)
Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)
[Verse 1: Titanic Sinclair]
I took you to a prison cell
You were afraid and I could tell
And on a train we met a friend
Who showed us that we should pretend
[Pre-Chorus: Mars Argo]
We could pretend
You could be my best friend
[Chorus: Mars Argo & Titanic Sinclair]
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Simulation, computation
This is not a representation
This is how I know you
[Verse 2: Titanic Sinclair]
Your glow reflects upon my skin
You are the key that lets me in
[Pre-Chorus: Mars Argo]
We could pretend
You could be my best friend
[Chorus: Mars Argo & Titanic Sinclair]
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Simulation, computation
This is not a representation
This is how I know
[Post-Chorus: Titanic Sinclair (Mars Argo)]
We could live in a dream (This isn't any time or place to be)
Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)
Buried under a tree (This isn't any time or place to..)
[Bridge: Titanic Sinclair]
And through a screen I saw her face
I knew that she was my escape
[Chorus: Mars Argo & Titanic Sinclair]
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Technology is a dead bird in your hands
Simulation, computation
This is not a representation
This is how I know you
