"Beauty Is Empty" is a song by Mars Argo, featured as the third track of their 2011 EP, Linden Place, and the first of its 2015 edition.

Background[]

Mars Argo posted the song's title to her Twitter account around January 14th, 2011.[1][2] She created a Flickr account named after the track later that month,[3] along with a now-deleted Tumblr page sometime after.[4]

A remix of the song, produced by Johnny K, was recorded at Groovemaster Studios in 2012 and confirmed by Titanic Sinclair in a tweet.[5] In a February 2013 interview with Noisey, Argo and Sinclair confirmed that a Johnny K-produced single would be released the following month, along with a B-side,[6] although this unfortunately never occurred. The two tracks are theorized by many to have been the remixes of "Using You" and "Beauty Is Empty", due to them performed together at many of the band's shows throughout 2013, such as Bardot and Pehrspace.[7] Moreover, all known 2013 performances of "Beauty Is Empty" have swapped around bridge lyrics, similar to how the "Using You" remix has swapped around verses.

Theme[]

The song possibly references the Bible verse Proverbs 31:30, "Beauty is false and favor is empty, but a woman that is in awe of Lord Jehovah, she will be praised", as there is a lot of religious symbolism in the music video. Sinclair described the track as being about girls who "think they're hot shit when they ain't shit" in a February 2012 interview with FearlessRadio.[8] Some fans theorize that it was actually written by Argo about Sinclair cheating on her in 2009, an event that would eventually play a part in their break-up.

Lyrics[]

Mirror mirror on the wall
Who's the fairest of them all
She can bring you to your knees
But she's hard to please

"Oh my God, I'm so surprised to see you.
I'm so glad to finally meet you."
She'll swallow him with those big blue eyes

I see you staring in your mirror
What will it take for you to see
Your pretty smile is a monster
And your beauty is empty

If you could see what you could be, girl
You wouldn't be dishonest to me, girl
Your mystery doesn't fool me

I see you staring in your mirror
What will it take for you to see
Your pretty smile is a monster
And your beauty is empty

I don't want to worry about it
I can't sleep, I think about it

Don't want to worry about it
I can't sleep, I'll dream about it
You're on your own now

Mirror mirror on the wall
Who's the fairest of them all
She can bring you to your knees
But she's hard to please

"Oh my God, I'm so surprised to see you.
I'm so glad to finally meet you."
She'll swallow him with those big blue eyes

I see you staring in your mirror
What will it take for you to see
Your pretty smile is a monster
And your beauty is empty

If you could see what you could be, girl
You wouldn't be dishonest to me, girl
Your mystery doesn't fool me

I see you staring in your mirror
What will it take for you to see
Your pretty smile is a monster
And your beauty is empty

I don't want to worry about it
I can't sleep, I'll dream about it

I don't want to worry about it
I can't sleep, I'll think about it
You're on your own now
